When you suggest changing out the sprinkler valve for piston valves do you have a specific type in mind? Look around the house and be creative 
The most random things can be turned into a good piston..
reinforced soup cans, pvc endcaps, or make one out of washers, O-rings, and a piece of threaded rod.
