Slight deviation here, but still on the 'questions from new cannon builder' general theme...

What is the generally accepted 'Best' valve type for a 3000psi air cannon?

I've heard the term "hammer valve" and searched for it here, and even googled it with very little success.

I found a great site that had a valve description for a 'Girandoni' style air gun, does it look like one of those?

I only want to play with normal old air... (At this stage! )

Should I have started a new thread for this?

Some what contradictive dont you think: 3000psi is not normal old air, it is quite the opposite, and nothing for a new cannon builder to play around with, i had to realize that to but it is too dangerous to jump into a part of the pool this deep, i would suggest around 200psi for now, it is alot safer, and for the beggining just as fun.
Hammer valves are my favorite valves up until now, being simple to build and having a higher flow than ball valves. Search explosive air release valve on google or click on the link in my personal message or what ever you would like to call it.
Depending on where you live a QEV(quick exaust valve) would be great for your purpose, or you could try a simple blowgun (or having a go at modding it) JSR had great sucsess with them.
Sprinklers are an option but i am not the person toask about those, There is agreat new stick on them though if you need info.
Piston valves are fairly complicated for the first build( for the first few builds really), but will be a valuble valve once you get further into spudding.

That is really it, I would recomend a hammer or QEV valve, look up the DIY on it.

For 3000psi, I would suggest either a piston valve (suitably built of course), or a hammer valve.

The Girandoni does indeed use a hammer valve, as do many airguns, antique through modern.(The Air Force Condor, is a popular example.)

My co-ax uses both.

Don't be put off by assertions of how "hard" it is to make a piston valve.

Failures in this arena, can often be traced to poor workmanship and/or a simple lack of fundamentals.

AMEN you should try to build one and if you fail which will be very likely for it being your first (I failed at my first but I can make them with my ass cheeks now) don't let yourself get turned off of spudding shrug it off and build another.

That is an ingenious design for a lower power compressor, as most people will be able to use it. The only reason I have an air compressor is for pressurizing my in-ground sprinkler system and filling tires, oh yeah, and shooting spuds...
