I began building my own version of this cannon the other day. My piston is 1/2 CPVC which floats in 1/2 SDR 13.5 pipe inside of a male and a female fitting. The whole section is removable from the rest of the cannon. Instead of tape my seal will be paintball tanks o-rings. From the half inch pipe threads I have a brass bushing down to 1/8 inch for the air hook-ups and popoff valve.

Here's picture of the progress so far.

No barrel or piston yet and the pop-off valve isn't on. My barrel will be 1/4" copper and will hopefully shoot nails. I am working on a way of feeding this gun but I'm not sure how yet. Most likely breech loading for now but a belt feed would be sick when I fugure out how to do it. All parts are 1/2 inch and back end is 1/8" for minimum volume behind the piston which is 1/2 CPVC.
