I promised photos of the primer job. I have them and they are posted below. There is no reason for sloppy primer stains on joints. This joint would pass inspection. The entire glued area is covered in primer. Care was taken to prevent it from running where it was not wanted.
This was done by marking the desired edge with a pencil mark and greasing the barrel up to the mark and then applying primer up to the other side of the mark. Glue squished out when it was assembled. The glue was quickly wiped off with the grease. After drying it was cleaned with soap and water.
