If this can get approved by the Administration here, we can go ahead and start organizing this.

As far as the contest to see who would become "thread starter" I'm thinking something simple, such as an idea, should be used instead of a major contest.

A launcher is a tool, one lays out the specifications according to what one intends to do with it.

If I want to blow massive holes through domestic appliances, I won't build an airsoft BBMG.

Personally, the goal is always to build something that is as:

compact

powerful

silent

cheap

easy

as can be. The ultimate weapon would be a derringer with the power of a 50 cal as quiet as an airsoft pistol.

Unfortunately, many of the specifications are antagonistic and there has to be a compromise. If you want very long range, you're going to have to forget about compactness, low cos and usually low noise levels.

The point here is that everyone lives in different locations with different resources, and designs are adapted accordingly. Reaching consensus would be a bit of a bother.

Well instead of everyone saying exactly what they want the cannon to be, how bout an admin gives us a real world scenario where a cannon can be used to solve a problem.

For example: You need to get to the top of a 100 story building. You can't go inside and you need to do it in thirty minutes. Naturally being a spudfiles member you have a cannon in hand. What would it need to look like to accomplish the mission?

If this is a community project, shouldn't we take advantage of the fact that some members have the skills and equipment to actually machine parts

I don't think that building one gun/design per project will result in creativity... we really need several designs created, developed and built by different competing members or teams of members... you know 'adversity springs creativity' or something like that

what is more, I am afraid that senior members will be the most influential when it comes to ideas... you know if JSR says that something won't work people take it for granted

that's why I think it shouldn't really be a community project where all members participate to design one gun.... we need teams or individual members competing with their own designs... members living in the same country, state or continent or having the same ideas could form one team together

Anyway it seems to be a good idea to break down teams into regions, Less arguing. Perhaps there can be a sticky for each region.

I always say it probably won't work, I'm a spudding agnostic everyone is welcome to prove me wrong, and I'm happy when they do

Personally I think an acctual community project would be better. We all brain storm and then vote on designs, or have features shared, then one person builds it. That is cheaper and in the end most probably less complex than if we split up into teams and what not. Remember this is not a contest, it is to bring out new ideas and to make new inventions for the spudding world. And seeing as how one member can do som, imagin what the entire forum could?
How about we get it started, just give it a shot and see what happens. Then at the end we either re evaluate and try again differently or we keep going the way we did.

So, who else says we get going?

OK I'm going to offer up a contrarian POV here.

Haven't we already been acting as a "community" of some sort here? The technologies for this hobby are pretty much laid out in concrete at this point. Short of a fully engineered from scratch, formed, milled, firearm like cannon (which I would be all for BTW), I'm not sure a "community" effort is going to take stock plumbing and air power parts much further than has already been attained and well documented here in these hallowed pages.

Actually, thinking about it, if I were ever condemned to death and could choose the manner of my own execution "getting fired out of a massive hybrid" would be right up there next to "drug fuelled sex heart attack"

You da man and all, but I will have to somewhat disagree with this. The primary purpose of a community project is to attempt and go beyond that which is laid out in concrete. To think outside the box. Everyone (especially here) has the potential to think this way, but sometimes persons need a little bit of an edge to get there. By others inputting ideas, it may trigger some of this type of thinking.
