I used to spend a lot of time with guitars & amps (building, playing, modding ).Now, spudguns are my new favorite thin :bom: !
I used to be massively into model aircraft, tried to get back in the hobby a couple of times but to no avail, nothing beats the visceral joy of designing and building something that can blow holes in stuff.
I just shot it again and I've noticed it's really loud
Welcome to the wonderful world of high pressure air :)

Just a sign that you have power to spare, and that with a longer barrel you would have even more energy.

Yes! we are all just kids after all !

Do you think making the air chamber smaller will result in more shots per fill?

Of course, and less noise too - but at the expense of velocity.

Yes GGDT shows a change from 100cc to 50cc chamber will only cost me 37fps..I'll go for it!

So i was at the local market yesterday and i saw this toy gun for 5$..I was thinking, why not use it as a housing for the 10mm i planning?

so i got it, did some modification on it (space for the valves, triger, breech loader ext..) and i think this could actually work, it came with a plastic detachable stock (not in the picture) and i was suprised to find the rails are compatible with picatinny rail mount :)

solution for the lazy :bigsmurf:

That's a good looking conversion

thanks man

It's pretty much done now. only took me about 2 hours to make it.
features:
3/8" QEV (added a spring)
3/8" Slide valve
1"X10cm (50cc) air chamber
10mm diameter, 25" long barrel (blow gun barrel)

I removed the insides and cut some of the plastic, after putting everthing in, i used some expanding foam to fill the empty spaces & make everything stay in place. I drilled a 10mm hole in the barrel (right next to the QEV) and used a tube with a handle to seal it, attached a trigger and a reloading handle to the slide valve, and that's it. it's pretty light and surprisingly easy to aim, shoot & reload. I can't find the detachable stock though  .. if i won't find it I'll just get another one from the market (the whole rfile kit was less than 5$)

power: the 63 grains bearing ball did penetrate 1/2" plywood from 10 meter away, but it doesn't feel as powerfull as my 15.5mm rifle (probably due to the smaller chamber). not sure what's the acttual velocity though - gotta get me a chronograph :!:

accuracy: still waiting on a 2.5-10X40 scope for it, but I did get some nice 1/2" groupings from 10 meter away.

shots per fill: I got 53 shots (by that time my tank was down to 500 PSI) - not to bad, could get better.

to summarize, I was really skeptical at first.. My original plan was to build a wooden stock for it.. but it turned out better than i anticipated, it saved me tons of work, and I allready got my 15.5mm rifle with a wooden stock

I can probably make it a bit better looking..got bored and wraped some paracord on it

I used chrono connect app to check muzzle velocity & energy today.
8 shots gave me an average of 1021 FPS with standard deviation of 9.3.
that's way better than i expected, and around 300 fps higher than GGDT predicted. I double checked the distance & settings on the app and it was all accurate, i guess i just missed something on GGDT's data, or one shim in the paintball regulator delivers more than 550 PSI.

That sounds a little optimistic to be honest...

I think it's worth purchasing a proper chrony if you want meaningful results, an F-1 Chrony is not too expensive and will allow you to measure the velocity of much larger projectiles as your addiction to launching objects at high velocity spirals more and more out of control ;)

Yes i know.. after my initial enthusiasm i did some reading on chrono connect and it turns out lots of people got wrong reading for different reason (background noise, natural reverb, echo ext..). (I guess i gotta change the title :( )

what do you think of this one? 20mm diameter

We sell this particular model and they are great value for money as far as airsoft is concerned - but shooting larger calibers, the risk of shooting it becomes much higher. Because of muzzle blast interference, you'll want to fire it from a good couple of inches away, which makes centering the barrel more difficult. For spudgunning purposes I would really recommend the F-1 or similar "open" style of chronograph.

I have said chrono, can recommend. I haven't noticed huge problems with vapour in pneumatics, I've also chronoed a .22lr with it successfully. Fantastic little unit, don't store it with batteries in though, it chews them.

not sure which one yet, but i gotta get me a chrono.

I used chorno connect again today with my 15.5mm, got different but consistent readings.. get this: I dry fired it and got the same readings

on a different topic,
any suggestion for an easy accurate nail dart for my 15.5mm barrel? so far i tried a duck tape cone with some hot glue..not so accurate.. I allso tried 4 squers of 2"X2" from a plastic bag with hot glue like the red one here which was better.
still on the hunt for the perfect dart, thinking about rubber top golf tees

Just a thought but if you can get them the right size the brush top tee would be interesting to try

it's a problem to find them with the right diameter.. the rubber heads are great because even if the diameter is larger than bore diameter you can fit them snugly like this guy does.

anyway, I'm almost done with my new 10mm rifle. the stock isn't as nice looking as I wanted it to be, but it's practical and I added a pressure guage behind the air chamber. The rifle operates smoothly with 550 PSI. I was also able to get 400 10mm bearings ball for about 20$. I'll make a new post with a video on both rifles soon

Not sure about the power, but this old metal tool box didn't make it :blackeye: 200 PSI = dent 550 PSI= full penetration

mmm...

Great stuff! Who needs darts when you can punch through with brute force :D
