I started with pneumatics, too.

We should start a "Pneumatic first cannon" group then.
Now, how many people did start with a safe, and reasonably advanced cannon (i.e, not hairspray or ball valve)?

Lol i started with minis then pnuematics then combutions still waiting for hybrids

Well I started with a water gun. Used a 2L bottle for the water tank. Had a V to fill and then a BV to fire.
On my back I had a mini car battery, 2 air compressors and 7 robart air tanks that stored air at 120psi.
Obviously with it being a water gun I didn't need quick opening....

6 monthes later mopher made one out of pvc with another coke bottle chamber/ while he was over we went to the hardware store made another and got hooked.
since then i have made one working sprinkler cannon. One the was a bucket o crap. Like 3 cannons made from spare parts. 1 was a smallish conbustion otehrs were pnuematic.
Mopher and are hope fully going to start the 4 inch co axial(sp?).
i have to say that that my favorite spudding moment was when i showed him my coke gun . shot a AA at his wall and it split open, and he was like "shit!" and then "that was so cool"

It all started in 5th grade (4 years ago) when my science teacher was teaching us to make 2 liter bottle rockets. To demonstrate the fin design, he launched a cadboard tube rocket out of a pneumatic launcher. I asked him how to build one and he told me the parts. I ended up with the wrong scrader valve (it wasn't a check valve) so it had to to hooked to my pump. After that I hooked up a cheap foam rocket, and started using it in airsoft wars. After that, I showed my teacher the gun, and he gave me a tubeless tire valve, it improved the preformance, and after that I was hooked! Then I evolved to an under barrel grenade launcher, then about 3 ball valve guns, and a sweet golf ball launcher. Then a HUGE cannon. Then a mini combustion. Now I have the gb launcher my, pb shotgun, my m700, and the grenade laucnher

sadly i have to say im in both those groups, i always thought that my first would be a combustion

Sadly? What in the world is wrong with a pneumatic? Ot a safe cannon for that matter?

i started with pneumatic, and i doubt i will start making combustions or hybrids anytime soon. I like killing all the guys at the dunes in distance competitions too much. and as for hybrids, theyre too time consuming and complex to build, i would rather just shoot a gun haha. compressed air FTW.
BTW my first cannon was sooo lame lol. 2:1 C:B ratio and a ball valve.

Well, I started off with
this but once i made my first pneumatic, never went back

though have made a couple of combustions laong the way and there are areas where they certainly have merit.

Well my brother saw some guys shooting spuds into the sea, he wanted to make one but gave up. me being the younger more intelligent brother spent a few weeks and hundred bucks and came up with a really bad C:B ratio combustion. 1' of 3" chamber with a 3' 2" barrel

Heh, the way my search for ignition sources is going, I may have to join that group. I'm still going to use a breech barrel either way.

Ok Joanna, I think my first cannon matches your criteria. I used a modified solenoid valve, had both hookups for air compressor and bike pump (schrader and quick-disconnect), and had a pressure gauge.
I built it to fire waterballoons in water wars, and moved up to various types of produce.

I started with my 8 1/2 foot combustion. I figured, hey, go big or go home. I had wanted to do one for a while but I didn't think my parents would like it too much. Then my dad came home from Sunday school of all places and told me he thought it'd be fun to build a golf ball cannon, so I ran with it.

Aha! That's where I recognised your username from - you registered on SSCentral about a week back, yes?
And yes, that cannon definately matches the criteria proposed.
I would now link to my first cannon, but the pictures seem to have gone missing. Dang.
Well, for something that cost all of £4 ($8 in US money), it was a hell of a lot of fun.
