Fnord, All your Hybrids are so detailed. So many wires and pipes etc.

I see it pays off though your inflicting massive amounts of damage.

Thats a sexy gun bud. Where did you get the pop-off idea from? A say an oxy tank wouldnt be that hard to chuck on it as well. Good work man, make sure you keep us updated on the progress of it, damage pics, videos etc, I give it a sexy vote.

'Effin nice man, great job. I love the little ones, so much whallop in such a little package. I might have to go dump a few bucks into making one soon, its been so long...

I'm curious, how much flow restriction do you think there is? If you were able to decrease the restriction by maybe refining the valve (machine the parts perhaps?) that little gun could do some serious perforating.

And about the Mauler, I think I'd prefer this thing over it lol, the Mauler was the meanest SOB in the valley lol. Two shots in a day and you were done hah, slinging a 2.5" frozen apple (estimating that to weight about a third of a pound) at 700 FPS out of a gun that weighs 15 pounds... rough stuff, to say the least.

Anywho, great job man, cant wait for the next version.

(@Jolly roger: I just thought of the pop-off valve idea randomly, it seamed a logical choice when I looked at what I needed to do.)

Spudinator: There isn't really much flow restriction now. It's a little less efficient than a burst disk, but probably not too much. It's like a 5-10 ms opening time vs a 1 ms opening time.

I made the piston from some 2" aluminum bar stock which already had a cut made in it that I could glue o-rings into. Honestly I don't think there is anything else that would stand up to repeated firings(I don't use a bumper) and not get damaged.
Or, at least nothing I have access to.

Did you chrony the mauler by the way? I couldn't get the same numbers with evbec, but I don't know how accurate it is with hybrids.
I calc'd both gun's specs with evbec, and just used that as a baseline for comparison in my post.

6oz at 700 fps is about 3000 lbs of muzzle energy by the way, so it does seem a bit much.

Thanks everyone.

(edit: Also, I'm going to try and get a video up in a couple weeks. I don't have high speed internet at home so I can't do much from here.

Yeah just that I put a thread up a while ago on pop off's for hybrids thats all. I think 3000 lbs would seem appropriate, but then again I dont know a whole deal about the gun so maybe not. Anyway bud, nice work, look foward to your next.

Yah, I chronied it (though I do think I busted out a few 4x, that would make a big difference), I think the highest I had was around 780 fps lol. The barrel was 5.5' of 2.5", so it had a good C:B ratio (works out to a little under a .2:1, extremely efficient) So 3000 ft-lbs doesnt seem too far off the scale. Hell, I've seen a new big-bore hunting cartridge that slings out 5,600 ft-lbs, and it cant kick a whole lot harder than the mauler (though the gun probably weighs a good 10 pounds more lol).

I'm going to be bumping this up in the near future to add updates, so it doesn't really matter.

"The area with the bark blasted away is about 4" in diameter. I think the ball may have bounced back out, but I can't find it anywhere. This was done with the 18" barrel"

That lead ball probably disintegrated into shards and powder, pretty typical of unjacketed lead.

could someone explain what a "piston hybrid" is

by sniperjosh
It uses a piston valve to release the pressure down the barrel after ignition, instead of the traditional burst disc system.
