Quick question:
Does anyone use fresh engine oil when cutting on a lathe to help the bit cut?
I have cutting oil but its getting low and need to use something else in the mean time

Motor oil will smoke and stink like hell, but it works.

I would use water before using oil.

Definitely. I think the motor (oil) is specifically designed to prevent machine tool like processes from happening in engines.

And I apologize for my rant.

hey all, need some more stuff machined.
I need six of each of these designs. Should be made out of some sort of steel, preferably harder steel as they need to penetrate.
Someone wants to give me a quote that'd be great.

I'm not really sure if this is what we're doing in this thread, but I'm just posting thanks to jrrdw. He machined some nice pistons for my hybrid!
My creation is the ugly PVC and epoxy one in the middle

They are approx. .832" in diameter, drilled through and tapped M6 X 1.0 pitch threads and plugged with set screws sealed with Loctite. Don't know the length, I just used the PVC piston as a measure for the length only. The diameter was custom fitted to the cylinder with a clearance of approx .001"/.0005".
The off the shelf brass fittings are NOT machined to exact tolerances making it very hard to get exact measures. Further more are not made with enough thickness to machine to create exact tolerances. To do so in this case would have created weak spots not worthy of safely using this configuration.

Wow ramses. Nice! I assume its going on a 3way + qev + pneumatic cylinder combo?
