You're thinking of the old days or cosmetic industry. The paper doesn't give away too many details but the test subjects were part of the same life long group, only endured one test a day, we're familiar with both the enclosures and scientists and were probably part of a zoo or similar; considering it's frans de waal who authored it. Usually, primates like these are based at a uni or zoo and have good, open living areas.

Edit: I've done a few primatology courses and I can't think of any studies
I've read by primatologists where the primates are treated badly. Any primatologist I've spoken to would be against such treatment. There are probably exceptions overseas though.
