I should also mention that any four-way solenoid can be effectively converted to a three-way, by simply blocking off one of the outputs (blocking the idle output makes it a normally-closed; blocking the firing output makes it a normally-open).

well I was about to suggest that...
the idea is simple - you block off one output and it almost becomes a 3 way valve - I say almost because it will still loose a tiny amount of air - precisely the volume of the inside of the valve leading to the blocked off port

it has one major advantage - you buy a 5 way valve and then you can either have:
A) a 5 way valve
B) a NO valve (if you block off one port)
C a NC valve (if you block the other port)

I'll experiment with when I get it then. Now all I have to do is find a valve with 1/4 NTP threads

it would be enough but 1/4" would give you better power
