Well its like Army/Navy cept its Merchant Marine/Coast Guard. Really big game, we killedthem this year at football. It was awesome

My Dad tried to get me to apply to the coast guard academy,I just couldn't bring myself to that kind of humiliation I wan to be a Marine not cruise around in white and orange boats.I like Guns

why is "liberal" being thrown around like a bad thing? look, I'm not going to pretend I know alot about the war but liberals are the ones who lobby for as much freedom, of everyone, as possible. conservatives are the ones restricting almost everything.

again I know nothing about the war, so I can't comment on that But I'd be interested in hearing your views on more domestic based problems (U.S.A).

When I was in the Coast Guard, the death rate of Coasties due to action during peacetime was higher per capita than the losses by any of the other branches during war time.


There's plenty of shooting in the Guard.....and...it was our job to protect the coast....notice...it's still there!

Actually, during WWII the merchant marine had the highest loss of life for graduates, more than the marines, army, and navy. And yes I wont agrue that the Coast Guard is essential to our nation's defense, however they are our enemys when we are at school. So I am a tad bit biased

Liberalism by definition is not necessarily a bad thing. Liberalism, as practiced today is killing Americans.

Liberalism has created our enemy, radical Islam....sworn to kill all those who don't convert to Islam.....and a few more that do.

In order for liberalism to accomplish anything...they must first "TAKE" from those who have to give to those who don't. It's done with "feel good" taxes.

There are many problems with that philosophy.

"Charity" used to be be something every community had utilizing churches or community programs to assist those in need. Citizens of the community cared for other citizens of the community. Money that was given to charity was given freely by citizens. The slang was "Poor House". If you were on charity....by golly it was a great day when you got off! Celebrated even!

Charity as practiced today is extorted from tax payers with no assurance the money will be used as intended...and often the results of tax paid assistance are a disaster. Namely welfare....is a tribute to liberalism run amuck. Welfare is a way of life...and that is contrary to everything American.

Liberalism....ruins community.

Not to mention those that "have", have more taken from them.
Those that don't have are "given" to.

You cannot created a more imbalanced scenario that introduces hate.

Those that have are not inspired to become involved with the "community" because they are already taxed unfairly.
Those on the receiving end simply want more....they never get enough.

Ironically, charity, earning a living, producing, being a citizen, dedication, discipline and a few other moral and character building truths are found in the bible. Liberalism, as practiced today, runs counter to biblical principle!

Conservatism, when practiced, always works. Had Bush practiced "Conservatism" instead of "liberalism" during his term, our country would be far more secure, there would be way less of the enemy and we wouldn't be fighting with our selves.

I believe the Liberal Vs Conservatism thing is going to become just like the North Vs the South Civil War in the coming years.



Regarding your comment about being offended......

I think it is the mark and measure of a man to engage those who don't necessarily agree with him. I'd much rather be invited to a liberal party than a conservative party as I enjoy gasps and stunned silence far better than knowing laughs and camaraderie.

The answer is the message. Conservatives believe Americans can take care of themselves. Liberals believe Americans need help from cradle to grave.

Herd mentality is for union workers, followers, the uneducated, people who would willingly strap a yoke on to follow another's idea.

It was a funny fact we were taught in boot camp that during Vietnam, rather than avoid the draft, many chose to join the Coast Guard thinking....what are my chances of dying? Or maybe it was easier than being a conscientious objector?


On the topic of graduating....lemme tell you:
You are in for a rude awakening on your first assignment.

I don't say this to be mean...it just is. I've seen it.
I ran boats in the Coast Guard...when I got into the commercial world it was like entering a whole new universe.

To be a successful mariner in the wheelhouse...you have to eat sleep and breath the job. When my buddies were off chasing women and getting drunk in bars...I was trying to determine why seagulls don't fly into a dumpster full of fish. In my mind, I was always driving a tugboat docking a ship whether driving the car, at the grocery store or mowing the lawn.

There is no replacement for experience at sea and it comes at the expense of pride.

The sea is a humbling place.

During the mid 80's, a company I had worked for off an on made the decision to replace big dollar tug boat operators with recent academy graduates with huge licenses for less than half the dough.

It was a spineless bean counter decision.

(EDIT: It was a strange quirk. If you went to a ship....you worked your way up through the ranks. Yet....the license entitled to operate as master all kinds of ocean going equipment which was exploited by several outfits. What young graduate full of piss and vinegar wouldn't want to run anything? The losses incurred forced the company out of business. It wasn't the fault of the license holder directly...it was the mindset of the business to undervalue experience)


There is nothing worse than being at the wheel of a 5000 Hp tug towing three barges holding a unlimited master's license and knowing you don't know what to do next......and worse, the crew knows you don't know what to do next. A captain is nothing without his crew. Most seasoned crewmen will just go and hide where they can jump to save themselves, and watch an orchestra of smoke and steel plates getting smashed, sparks and terrific noises only huge equipment can make when they crash together......while the "Academy Graduate" catches up on experience.

There is a saying in the biz..."It's not what you got but what you do with what you got!"

Again...I not bringing shame on you...just experience. Graduating from an academy is something I never did.
An unlimited masters license or 1000 ton master license is a great achievement.

Find yourself at the wheel....and you had better have more horsepower in the wheelhouse than in the engine room!

Looking at your critique of conservatism......it seems to hinge on moral grounds or the absence thereof?

Gays have no rights...certainly not in marriage. They simply have an obligation to be citizens.

Conservatives do not force religion on others. Their views simply come from a moral base.

Abortion is not the practice of moral civilization.

They very element of conservatism is the belief citizens know best how to run their life. Limiting government in our lives is a conservative goal to American prosperity. Lower taxes works every time it's tried!
Government is not the answer.

Let's accept some givens because what I'm going to say is not applicable to all liberals. Just for discussion we all want economic prosperity.  We all want opportunity.  We all want a chance at the American dream.  We all want to be left alone.  We don't want to be hassled.  We don't want to have obstacles placed in our way by government in the pursuit of our dreams.  The argument that we have in this country is how best to provide it.  That's where the line of demarcation is broad.

On the left, liberals do not believe that a majority of people have the ability to realize the American dream on their own.  Liberals have general contempt for the average American and average human being.  Liberals have a condescending contempt for the abilities, the intelligence, the ambition, and desire of average human beings.  Conservatives believe in the individual.

Bush spent like a liberal on social programs. He has scrooed the pooch on our borders. yet, I support Bush and the war. Still....his actions as president have been waaaaaay too far left...and therefore his failure in the eyes of the world and many Americans.

Abraham Lincoln...who most "ignorantly" would assume was always considered a great President was beaten by the press and Americans far worse than Bush all the while fighting a war in America losing up to 50,000 men in one battle. Lincoln was viscerally hated.

This war and Bush's term is not over. We are fighting two wars and the outcome is uncertain. Liberalism is the cause.

Unions and unionism are about as close to liberal thought as I can imagine. Unions across America have thrown their members under the bus by exempting themselves from all the basic and fundamental laws of economics. What you suggest is true if viewed as a snapshot. Taken from an historical viewpoint, unionism, like liberalism must take from others if it is to survive.
In the process of trying to provide for their union members of America they have paved the way for competition to do what Americans once did.

I'm certainly not going to contribute any money to anything involving government as that is not the place for government.

The government has few duties. I'm all for limiting government to that which is called out in the constitution.

Taking money from my wallet to pay for mexican babies is not one of them. Deporting them as criminals is a duty.
