Thinking about getting in to microscopy, have this one in mind:
Mechanical Stage

Condenser: NA=1.25 Abbe
Focusing Control: rack & pinion
Illumination: tungsten lamp, 110V/20W (220V version available)

Weight: 8 lbs.
Mech. Stage, coarse and fine focusing, Abbe condenser, Iris diaphragm, wide-field eyepieces and achromatic objectives with 100x oil immersion lens. Overall pretty good for a couple hundred USD, will probably remove the tungsten lamp and replace with LEDs due to the heat tungsten lamps create. Binocular would be cool but adds $$$ and I'm planning on making my own camera to hook it up to the computer so I probably wont be using the eyepiece much anyway.
Not sure how they get 2000x out of this microscope, I didn't think it was possible to get useful magnification at 2000x from a compound 'scope like this even with oil immersion.

If you can afford it, the best illumination for a microscope is to use a fiber optic light source with halogen lamps. The lamp uses a dichroic reflector which eliminates most of the IR. The rest is removed by another dichroic filter to pass the white light and block the remaining heat. The light is then focuses into a fiber optic bundle and aimed to illuminate the subject.
I use them at work and they are great.

Microscopes are amazing, just be careful you con't crush a silicate sample under the high-magnification lens, you'd be surprised how soft lenses really are when you grind them into high-temperature ceramics.

muhahaha.... I kinda like it... the guy is craving for a lathe and mill, that's obvious
It's like he said "I'm going to make a gun in meccano parts... with my homemade meccano parts!" I appreciate the crazyness of the idea...
What is he using to solder? Arc welding? I suppose it is aluminum... I want one!

Is there any soldering/welding in it though? seems to be completely bolted together.

Agreeably but it does look really cool, if all my guns looked like that I would make one hell of a lot of cash selling them.
