Jack, have you seen my hybrid preview? What recoil should I expect? Would it be adivsed to add a muzzle brake?

I tried but the pictures were the size ok a hippopotamus skin so I gave up

What performance are you predicting?

If you know projectile velocity and weight you can calculate approximately what the recoil forces will be, still I don't expect it will be worse than a 12 bore

Well, would I be a fool to say i expect 1200 fps from a 16mm marble? I really don't know...I plan on shooting carbon arrows, lead sinkers (different sizes , from 10 x 2grams buckshot to 18 gram lead sinkers...

We're thinking of something similar to Jeepkahn's design. He says it removes a considerable amount of recoil. We're thinking 4" pipe at 8" long ported on the top and sides to reduce muzzle flip and recoil and in actuality giving us a version of a compensator type muzzle break. Here's the question. Jeepkjan's brake is open on the end, while i've seen others where the brake is reduced back to just over the bore size. I'm pretty sure the reduced ended muzzle break will work slightly better than the open ended one, but I don't want to risk our sabots getting lodged inside the brake. Is my paranoia well founded?

Sorry i didn't see this sooner, But, my brake is not open on the end, it's bore is only 1/8" larger than the barrel bore, it's made from a piece of 1.125"IDx2od" aluminum pipe/tube...

The Muzzle brake actually vents towards the back. No need for elbows. The fitting does it for us. We are going to slice off the connector parts for the 2" holes. That will help the gasses vent back more. Thanks, anyway Jeepkhan. We were seriously thinking about a ported brake. We looked around our local hardware store and came up with this one.

What a monster! I like it. I'm really surprized that the muzzle brake made that much difference. OTOH, I did have a large pneumatic that gave significant recoil w/o a projectile, so I guess it's reasonable.

Jack, I'm familiar with the muzzle brake, but do you or anyone else know what the large cylinder halfway up the barrel is for? (referring to the pic of the M109)

It's a chamber into which propellant gasses are bled, this tends to create a flow out of the muzzle after the projectile has left which keeps the exhaust gasses from entering the turret. This is why you see it on enclosed turret systems but not on towed artillery.
