Why'd you have to make such a beautiful projectile? Now we have to go through such extreme measures to find it

But actually, I think you'd be much better of firing 10 or so cheaper projectiles. It'd give you a much better chance of finding at least one

Do I need to make and photograph an example
I understand what you say and describe. I still think a projectile perfectly centered with a minimum of contact point in a hard sabot and a UHMW ring that reduce friction would be beneficial in that particular goal, which is to go as strait and as far as possible.
Why'd you have to make such a beautiful projectile?
very sorry about that :? Will not happen again :D

The difficulty would be to have 10 projectile well balanced, aerodynamic, sturdy and cheap ;-)
And anyway the projectile is cheap... I didn't talk about $$$, right?

[edit] hey! Maybe an auction  nah.....

How much were all the materials to make one projectile?

You mean seriously, in term of raw material? It's all from the scrap box....
plenty more from there :D

You cannot buy metal is such small quantity, it can't be more and a few $, and the little piece of stainless rod is certainly a good part of it.

The price in machining is the time you spend mostly, not the raw materials. And my time is always for free when I have fun ;-)

Divining rods ;) sounds almost as plausible as many of the ideas here :D

Hey MrCrowley,

I don't know if you noticed, but while I was searching some material for the sabot I noticed that sealant cartridges are a perfect fit for your 48.5mm barrel. At least the ones that hang around in my house :D

Here's an update of the incoming sabot.

Image
The inner shape that follow the MiniBoy shape is cut. The petals are for now too wide, I need to cut the outer shape.

Image
This aluminum square axis keep the spacing between the petals perfect. it will also be used to have 2 kind of sabot for the same price. A spindle sabot with separating petals, and a more classic cup sabot that stay together. Hopefully MrCrowley will be able to film the ejection for both kind of sabots, so we'll know if there's an advantage in this complicated separation design.

Image
The contour follow the MiniBoy perfectly, thanks to dewey-1 great 3D job, that I used to cut the angle (even if I didn't follow exactly the original design , that was not made to have the separating petals).

Tomorrow is Mother's day in North America, don't forget guys ;-) This also mean that my time is up for the weekend I guess :-( I'll do my best to do a little more.

Wow. :o
Have you thought of putting O rings directly onto the projectile for less weight? Would that fit any barrel materials?

If I read correctly, this is 19 mm in diameter? That is .748 inches. I think maybe 3/4" pvc as the barrel, it is .824 inches and sch 80 is .742.

But mrcrowley lives in NZ...Do they use metric pipe there?

Yea they use metric, the actual round is 19mm, but it will be fired from 48ish mm barrel thats why theres the big white thing(sabot) to increase the surface area acting on the round then if it was in a 19mm boar.

Forgot that a small barrel would decrease surface area and flow and hurt range. nvm

Incredible. That looks like it could be modded to house a wireless camera in the nose. Get a laptop with an amped antenna and you could record the flight of that bad boy and maybe aid in its recovery as well. It would go down in spudding history for sure.

That would be amazing.
