From some angles, the NTW20/14.5 looks really similar to the S2 AM from Halo. I wonder if thats what they based it on?

The way that the weapons in Halo are portrayed isn't very accurate. When you get hit in the torso by a high explosive 14.5mm round travelling at over 5000 fps, you don't remain standing. The need for head shots in that game is greatly exagerated.

And once again, Jack comes up with some of the best links. The ability to destroy an engine block from 100 meters seems like a bit of overkill for riot control, but, then again, the Soviets weren't very tolerant of rioting.

That's the first thing I thought when I saw the Halo weapon, it's the carrying handle that does it ;)

In Soviet Russia, riot runs you!

The Neostead shotgun has a dual tubular non-detachable magazine that holds 12 rounds and as a pump-action isn't noted for unreliability.
Well then, on that point, I stand corrected, but I don't imagine the mechanism is quite as relaible as the tried and tested single tube type.

The .50 cal pistol could concievably be made, but judging by the in game size of the thing, the magazine is rather modestly sized for twelve .50 cal rounds.

The magazines for the SMG and rifle are again rather small for their capacity - not impossible, but unlikely.

@DYI: The sniper rifle is still very nasty in game. Although it won't drop some of the Elites with a round through the torso, don't forget, they are wearing shielded power armour, which although the armour may not be much use against an anti-materiel round, the shield might be.

There is a point I forgot earlier: The gauss cannon.
The gauss warthog's main gun is described as having "hypersonic velocity" - which is about 2000 m/s. Basically, even on the longest maps, that should be under 100 ms of travel time, meaning that you should be able to hit things (like the banshee) quite well - but it's useless at long range, and a good estimate of what the velocity might actually be puts it at under 100 m/s.

Also, from a practical point of view, it is entirely metallic. This is not a good thing with magnetic weaponry - this produces losses through eddy currents, and with a fast enough pulse rise, the thing could actually be crushed by them.

In the second game on legendary, you can shoot an unshielded Jackal sniper in the chest with the S2, and it won't drop. Then, it will turn around and shoot you in the head about 3 times before you can pull the trigger again.

Has anyone noticed that this thread was originally about a homemade trebuchet, and that it has somehow shifted to a discussion of the viability of hypothetical weapons in the 26th century?

Actually, the discussion first turned into an argument about ballistas and trebuchets, then turned into a discussion of the progression of weapons technologies over time, then the hypothetical feasibility of weapons from Halo.

Ah well, that's legendary difficulty for you - everything's really tough at that level.

I think the true course was: Trebuchet; Trebuchet versus Ballista; 300 quotes; discussion of preferred firearms for combat situation; ideal firearms; Halo 8 gauge shotgun; All Halo weapons.

Yea, legendary is hard stuff. I've beat Halo on legendary, but I just started working on Halo 2. I have to say, the second one is significantly more difficult.

Indeed - I breezed through Halo. Legendary wasn't that hard - you did have to go back quite a bit, but it wasn't that challenging.
Halo 2 was difficult - I never finished it on Legendary, because I was struggling a lot. The Brutes are hard enough on Heroic, let alone Legendary.

I personally think that Heroic on Halo 2 is more the equal of Legendary on Halo 1.

Damn, I so want to get Halo 3 when it comes out, but I'm still on the XBOX, and I really can't justify paying £40 to 50 for the game and £300+ on the XBOX 360 console as well.

I know the feelign, I want it a lot. But the cheapest console is 350 USD now I believe, and the games are 50-60 USD.

From the replicas and represenations I've seen, the magazine is more than big enough to hold at least 12 0.50 action express rounds.

(sorry about the angry mom, this was the best pic I of the pistol I could find)

When you look at weapons in Halo, you have to take into account that the person holding them is about 6'10" tall, and weighs at least 400 lbs without the armor. A company making laser tag versions of the Covenant weapons had to scale them down after they realized just how big they were.

I've reserved a copy of Halo 3, so I get it on 25/09/07, but I can't get the 360 until November. :(

In that case, I'll take two.
It would actually be quite a cool thing to have I suppose - not "nerdy" to the casual observer, but to someone enough in the know, fascinating.

@DYI. I'm comparing it more to the Marines that are using it than Master Chief. I'm aware that the Spartans (NO!!!!!) outsize even my (old) school's headteacher - he's 6' 5", and even that's pretty big.
My memory of it is less than perfect though.

@Paiiyan: Actually, I do know someone who knows someone else who sells the consoles for half RRP (all versions)
What he does is buys broken consoles from the store he works at (returned by customers), then sends them off to Microsoft and gets them repaired/replaced. He then sells on the consoles at half price. So in the end, he makes a bit, the buyer saves a packet, and Microsoft is just doing what it should be doing.

At least, I think that's what's going on. They might be coming off the back of a lorry, but from what I've heard, his actions are entirely legal.

But even then if I do that, £200+ for the game and console is going to be a lot. I'll have to save carefully.

Why can't you people speak proper English? It's not a lorry, it's a truck, lol. I'm kidding. And that is still quite a lot of money for a game and system, nevermind that I'm already going to be spending around 1700 for the computer I'm building, that's without software.

Amazing how this thread used to be about trebuchets...
