Yep. You need to build one inside a presta valve now. Then I will be out of small objects to build inside.

I swear, I lost almost every internal part in the swarf pile on my lathe. Unfortunately, it will have a barrel and chamber around 0.1" long once I'm done, and I only have access to 150 PSI, so I will have a very hard time determining if it shot or not.

It's kinda sad when your pilot valve has approximately the same flow as the main valve. Same when your piston is longer than the barrel :roll:

It has to work first ;) not to sound pessimistic but it doesn't look like it will.

How do you plan on filling this thing, locking it in a pressurised chamber? Will there be a spring between the fill valve and the piston?

One word of advice, on the pico-ax, the piston is cut out of a section of bicycle inner tube, so it practically functions like a diaphragm valve.

Woo. First successful test fire of HEAL's rebuilt valve today. Not taken it past 15 bar yet, as there's a minor leak in the pump (or was, as it's already been fixed). But it'll still make spuds disappear at those pressures.

It'll also completely terrify the dog. Not exactly the most shining example of a gundog breed ever then.

Epic fail of the day: Soldering a compression nut to the olive associated with it.

Well, I hardly intended to.

I'd found a leak around one solder joint, and the problem was, it was about 5mm away from the compression joint. The attempt to resolder the joint resulted in solder getting into the compression joint (which I'd taken apart, as I didn't want to melt the ball valve seals).

However, fortunately, brute force and ignorance managed to get the nut and olive off the pipe, and they've now been replaced.

Good advice, and as I said, the last one didn't work. That picture is actually of the original, which I will refer as failed prototype 1 (FP-1 for short).

the new one is actually lubricated, and the sealing surface of the barrel is smoother. The new one has about .1" of barrel/chamber, the rest is taken up by my ghetto fill valve.

No spring in the fill valve, I was trying to replicate a presta. It SHOULD fill with a schrader chuck . My last one had the pin stick out too far, so I had to modify the air chuck. We'll see how this works, but if not, it gives me an excuse to go shooting. I'll run out at FP 600-ish, then go buy more ammo.

I'm on more than 2 figures when it comes to the FP-XX series :roll:

Thinking about it, I could probably manage something similar... but I'll rest on my laurels until someone betters the pico-ax :P

Anyone who tells you Milliput will stick to wood is a rotten liar. I've been using it to help bed launcher and stock together and it sticks better to Vaseline coated copper than it does the wood of the stock.
Which is why it's now sitting to harden overnight, after which I'll peel it off the copper and araldite it in place.

At the same time, I'm packing a 1/8" tee with the stuff. I doubt it'll make a huge difference, but by redrilling it out with smaller holes, it should cut the dead volume on the pump slightly.
Given that HEAL uses 5 kJ of gas per shot (the air in the chamber is frequently a greater mass than the projectile), every saving on pumping effort is welcome.

Cock. The check valve for the pump has completely had it and I'll need to order a replacement. Chance of firing before I go away: 0%.

I can finish the launcher itself, but that's the best I can currently hope for.

Today I finished all major repairs to FEAR as well as completed attaching the new recoil system I built (it is Hydro-pneumatic based). Preliminary testing today showed FEAR works flawlessly now and the recoil system has no problem handling 10x firings. We'll see what happens when I move towards 24-36 ounce projectiles.

I will do some more test firings in the coming days, but Monday I have a surgery scheduled for my ankle so further testing will be suspended for the next couple weeks.
