ignition from leaf blower

I've seen people hook their camera flash circuits up to an ignition coil from a car but would this one from a leaf blower work the same. If so does anyone know how to wire it.

it should work just the same.. i would bet the small metal tab is positive and the big black metal bracket is negative then of course the heavy duty wire is HV+ out. but im not 100%

Mmm...

You need the whole flywheel and ripcord setup to get the spark out of there. The coils are sealed in and have no voltage in connections.

Could be interesting to have a ripcord ignition on the rear of a large mounted combustion....

Nice post Spudblaster. I wonder though if that is a magneto or not.

Homedepotpro, how was the device mounted on the leafblower? Near, as in within a fraction of an inch, anything big, metal and spinning? If it was it is probably a magneto. If not, then it is probably a coil.

Whatever it is it is easy enough to test if it works. Take a 12V car battery (or 12V battery charger), a high current switch (a standard 120V wall switch will work for a while) and your device. Wire from the battery to the switch, from the switch to the metal tab on the device, from the braket on the device back to the battery. Put the HV lead near (less than 0.1") the battery negative lead. Flip the switch on then off. If it is a coil you should get a spark when the switch opens (and maybe when it closes).

Leaf blowers use a magneto ignition setup. A magnet is mounted on the flywheel, and the primary and secondary coils are mounted in an enclosure, which is positioned a certain distance away from the flywheel. As the flywheel rotates, the magnets pass under the coils. As the magnetic field passes through the primary coil, voltage is induced in the coil, which creates a magnetic field around the coil's core. When the magnets complete their passage, the magnetic field breaks, and high voltage is induced in the secondary coil.

well actually your almost right.. SB15...
A Flywheel(with magnets) rotates around some coils wich produces voltage.. that voltage powers a condensor wich fire's when contact is interupted this is done by contact points or a CDI..
So a camera flash does work connect the + to the little tab and - to the black iron... you also have to make the circuit compleet with an earth wire from the spark plug to the coil..(black iron)

This will work cause i have tried it myself .. but bought an car coils because the higher voltage it produces.
