Transitor help?

I am making another flyback driver an d I need a little help. Because the 2n3055 can be a very crappy transistor for use with a flyback, would it be posiible to run a flyback more efficiently off of a MOSFET or other transistor?
Summer Projects:
CO2 tank hybrid: Gotta fix the meter :(
Cane gun: Needs a pilot/fill setup
1.5" piston valve gun: Almost done

use a 2n5088 i always like germanium
