how does the flow compare to the average blowgun?
could I hack off the front part?

They have about the same flow as a blow gun. You don't need to hack the front bit off, you can just unscrew it (keep it though because it is handy to use to fill shrader valves directly from a compressor). The gauge only reads pressure that is in front of the valve so unless your using it backwards there isnt much point in it. I prefer regular blowguns.
