Coin Launcher v1.0

After
this discussion on coin launching, I remembered i had an unused pneumatic nailgun lying around and thought I'd give it a go. The mod is quite basic, I removed the nail magazine and replaced it with mostly lego components drilled and filed as needed with two piano wire rails added to guide the coins. The mag is a simple gravity feed. So far I've only tested it at 50 psi as each impact puts stress on the lego that is holding in the hammer guide and shakes it to pieces eventually, it's going to need some proper epoxying to stay in one piece but now after testing I can see it will be worth finishing.
Herewith some videos and pics:

note how a white plastic shim I was using to help guide the coins is shot out and embeds itself in the paper

again, the shim flies out on the last shot

This is still very much a work-in-progress, I hope to make some better vids at high pressure later this weekend, watch this space

Sweet as, at higher pressure watch out!
I love the fact you used lego

What kid hasn't wasted hours with that stuff?

Now your pictures don't work for me...god damn it.....they used to, but all your resent pictures haven't worked.......
but from what I see in the videos, it looks fun, keep on killing those smiley faces

I suppose that these coins will not fit through your chrony? What speed do you estimate?

that's strange, they're uploaded to spudfiles like always.

Sadly they don't fit, I'd say velocity is in the 100-200 feet per second range.
Off to do some epoxying so I can try some higher pressure tomorrow

you should put some rubber band on one side of your "launching rail" that'd give the coins a spin.

I rebuilt it and the epoxy's curing as we speak. What I did was assemple the unit upside down, pouring epoxy into the underside of the blocks as I went along. This means that not only will they be glued together but also that there won't be any hollow spaces in the construction that should make for a more heavy duty unit and i can take it to 110 psi and do some
real damage

this is kinda like what they did on Mythbusters for the falling penny myth, although they didn't use lego

that thing is pretty sweet, don't think i would want to get hit by anything coming out of it.

You mean
this one (sorry about the teenage intro, it was the only clip I could find) - hehe I hadn't seen that episode. Looks like theirs has a bigger piston than mine so the power potential is greater. Still, mine's semi-auto

Jack you crazy mofo. Now I have to go steal some legos from my robotics class.

I have a huge bag of Lego bits from various sets that I've been given from a young age. My parents believed in construction toys over computer games, and I thank them for it.

Jack when are you going to publish 101 uses for epoxy?
If my little cousin ever wants to make legos i end up makeing some kind of ghetto lego wepon.
Anyway sweet gun.

Does Mythbusters in the UK have an English guy narrating it?
BTW Jack, That's an awesome gun. A tad let down by it's pressure hopefully you can get it up soon!
