In what sense, down threads? Coating on the outside of the pipe?

Good for sealing end plugs. Epoxy, (marine type), seems to be used for the rest, or JB Weld.

Use silicone sealent if your sealing your piston to make it serviceable.

Well silicon has almost no strength what so ever, so epoxy is usually used in regard for its great strength. I have never used silicone because of its lack of strength. Use epoxy.

if your talking about silicone for basic construction(as in houses), no. they do make sealants for pressurized applications. some work better than others. depending on what your application is depends on the sealant or epoxy you should use. if it's thread teflon tape works well. some times you just end needing to scrap a part. it might not be worth it to seal.

The silicone sealants used for construction applications ...Window caulk, driveway seal, concrete,gasketing materials , Etc......Are all the same regardless of what the label on the caulking tube says it should be used for....The only difference is the color and some have trace ingredients to inhibit mold growth........It has very strong bonding properties and will seal air leaks to a degree in certain applications but It is not always the best option....What are you looking to seal ?......I work for G.E. silicones by the way.

I run the chemical processes used in the making of the silicone oils that go into every product you could possibly think of ....You would not believe some of the things that contain silicone.....Ketchup, beer ,shampoo, deodorant, perfume....list goes on and on....
