Does anyone know where I can find a list of how long it takes a certain type of valve to open?

i.e., ball valve, spring ball valve, piston, sprinkler valve, modded sprinkler valve?

And I have a sprinkler valve that I am going to modify with a blowgun, but if I add a foot or two of hose in between the valve or the blowgun, how much will it decrease performance? it will still be better than electrically operating it correct?

Read <A HREF="http://www.spudfiles.com/spudtech_archi ... 0">this</a> thread, the page it currently is on has times for sprinkler valves so you may have to skip through the pages for the ball valve. But it does have the times for modded and un modded sprinkler valves.

The hose will decrease performance, not sure exactly how much, but that's something you can find out on GGDT.

It will ask you in GGDT for the pilot volume of the valve you are using. Either measure the I.D of the hose and find out the volume using math or just fill it with water and convert the volume in liquid to a volume in cubic inchs or cm.

So just compare differences using the different numbers of pilot volume?

I thought having a higher pilot volume was good, which is why I am modding my sprinkler in the first place?

The larger the pilot volume, the longer it takes to empty and therefore the valve opens slower -----> less power

The point of modding the springkler is to replace the solenoid (tiny tiny flow) with a blowgun (much better flow) in such a manner that the pilot will empty quicker

No, your modding your sprinkler valve so it gets rid of the pilot volume quicker.

It will still work but cut your performance down by a certain percentage, if you're willing to live with that go ahead.

Listen to jack,Small pilot volume is very important for performance.I made a modded sprinkler valve before and had about 30cm of 1/4 ID tubing between it and the blow gun and the performance between having the blow gun right on the valve and with the hose was noticeable,VERY noticeable.

what is better as a pilot valve a 3/8" slide valve or a 1/2" ballvalve ?

What sized valve is this going to be used on?If it's a 1" sprinkler then don't worry about going above 1/4 at all,but for a large piston the larger the better to an extent,so the 1/2 ball valve.

A 1/4" ball valve should be better than a 3/8" slide valve, but the 3/8" slide valve should have sufficient flow to get the job done, and be more ergonomic to use. If at all possible, mount it directly to the sprinkler valve, and don't use a hose. My first sprinkler used a hose, and managed to honk excessively when fired. My newer sprinkler valve has a blowgun tapped directly into the valve cover, and fires nicely every time.
