Retirement?

This may be posted but I cant find it in a search.....
When should a cannon be retired?
I know there are a lot of variables but is there a good time frame....1yr, 2yrs, as long as you feel it is safe!
The reason I ask is that I have a pvc pneumatic that I built 2 yrs ago. I shoot it the other day and it seemed fine. But as I ate my dinner I was questioning the age of the pvc. I know that pvc shatters and I don't feel like piking plastic out of my a** when it explodes.
