Perhaps a sanded down ½ inch end cap.

How about a wooden dowel.
And if it doesnt fit you can just add some duct tape.

wooden dowels come in 7/8" and 1" diameters, but usually come in 24" lengths minimum. i am more of a fan of the epoxy piston in such a small piston though.

do we really have to kill another rain forest for a piston?

yes, we do :D
We will do anything to obtain a well working piston that is readily avaiable and doesnt require any work other than putting a sealing face on.

Besides sensitive body parts, they sell these things called test plugs. They can be hand tightened to however tight you want it, and are pretty much ready made, although you will have to replace or cut off the washer thing that sticks out on one end. Please note that I myself have not used one (yet) although there is a thread here about them. Hopefully this pic works.

Nice thought Kablooie but it looks as though those particular plugs would be too short, maybe one could line a few up a glue them together though.

The ones I saw at Ace hardware were a little bit longer, but yeah if they are too short gluing would work too.

I second the wooden dowel suggestion. Strong yet easily sandable if needed...easy to glue and screw to.
