do you think it would increase the strength of a sch 40 steel pipe if I poured about a half inch of epoxy around it? would it be enough to safely take to a 10x mix?

sch40 steel pipe is already fine for 10x.
Its the fittings that are rated to 150psi that arnt.
just go buy some high pressure fittings off mcmaster, no need to slop epoxy all over it.

My friend made a dry ice gun out of pvc that worked with those rubber things over it.

this is the part number I would need and it is $51 for one tee. 45525K546

you have probably seen the 5" pressure test with Larda?
2600psi with no problem.. about the same walls as sch 40.

so what could I do for the fittings?

Well those things just wont cut it it may be able to stop a pneumatic explosion but a hybrid explosion has a bit more ompff to it.

Sorry to hear about the price, but i reccomend you pay it anyway.
If you really don't want to then I would recommend DYI's concrete method over epoxy.

What type of fittings did it have, the ones rated to 150psi or the ones you buy online or a specialized store rated to much higher pressures.

spudfarm: It holds up fine...so far. I've yet to chrono, though. I'm prepping it for golf balls so, maybe.

bigbob: You're right about the fittings. The store I buy from has the high pressure rated ones and those are the ones I use. I can't remember the rating, but is higher than 150psi.

I have a 1" tee , a 1/2" cross, and two balve valves rated to 600psi. do you think it will be fine to take to 10x? I think the ball valves can take it, but I am not sure about the cross and tee.

It will most likely survive but there is that chance that it wont.
Its like using DWV in a pnuematic, never know when its going to go boom on you.
Remote ignition would be a must for every single shot if you were to risk it.

Ok, so it might have worked fine for you, and I tested it at that mix, but you can't pretend to know all the variables in someone else's gun.

The fact is, 10x is running very close to the theoretical burst pressure of 2" threaded sch40, which doesn't make it fine until you can prove there are still decent safety margins.
If you have a blast shield of some sort, then it should be acceptable to use such mixes. If you just "stand back a little", it probably isn't wise.
