Just to give everyone a heads up, but plans have changed. [redacted], as everyone seems to call it, won't be getting built, at least any time in the foreseeable future. This is because of several reasons; legality, weight, cost, ease of use, and practicality being the most important. The mass of the design was quickly approaching a metric tonne, and reloading would be a very slow, painful process, even with the stand. As much fun as it would have been, it just can't be realised right now.

I offer no apologies, as this design wasn't even supposed to be released until I was well into the construction phase, mostly to avoid disappointing anyone if it became impossible to complete.

However, I do need a good summer project, and an earth-shaking BOOM followed by large masses leaving a pipe at ridiculously high velocities are prerequisites.

I've already designed the BOOM, the pipe, and the large masses at high velocities. I'm currently working with Larda on the whole "allowing it to survive more than one shot" part. More information will follow, but so far I'll say that the current project is called "Thor", and leave it at that.

Funny, I got a project called Moljinir (Thor’s hammer); which is a pneumatic howitzer.
The goal being a cannon capable of putting a specialized air bust canister full of paintballs down range between a quarter and a half a mile; hoping for a kill zone of between 1-10 acres…

I'm pretty sure the correct spelling of the name of Thor's hammer is "Mjolnir", but whatever. And this Mjolnir project of yours sounds interesting, and also rather difficult... I mean really, a kill zone of 1 acre? That's an awful lot of paint.

And to anyone looking for fine white print, you're wasting your time. It gave away the first project, and I won't allow that to happen again.

Well, it probably has something to do with the fact that I haven’t seen it spelled in over a year, and, come to find out, I have been pronouncing it wrong, I pronounced it “MOLE-ju(as in just)-NEAR”, when it’s really MOLE-NEAR or something like that…

As for the howitzer, I’m looking at a 20+ pound load of paint, and there’s 10 paintballs to the ounce…
it’s going to be a HUGE cannon, main reason I haven’t built it yet…
estimated 40+ foot 4 inch barrel; four 3 inch by 20 foot chambers; four 3 inch porting piston valves; recoil operated, automatic, fed from an eight round hopper… 8)
edit: GGDT puts that at .44 mile range. 8)

AFAIK, it's pronounced Mij-ol-near, where the "Mij" is pronounced something like "Midge".

Ok, strictly Ragnarok should be spelt Ragnarök when using a Latin based alphabet, but not all computers and fonts will display the ö properly, so I don't often use it.

I'm a fan of letters like ä, ö, ü, æ;, œ, ñ, þ, ð, ſ, that kind of thing, but I seldom use them, because most people mix them up with other things - you might note however that I spell dæmon with an æ; (sometimes known as "ash").
For example, the lower case þ letter (thorn), pronounced as "th", has been confused for the letter "y" in texts, giving rise to the pseudo-archaism "Ye", used in terms like "Ye olde tea shoppe" It was actually "þe", which was still pronounced "the".

So that might answer that question. I'm something of a stickler for words being spelt "right", even if that means using letters considered extinct.

@DYI: Sounds a cool project. I had a project that was called Thor once, but it eventually it got renamed to "Timberwolf" - want to guess what my current avatar shows? Always been a fan of wolves - I did once consider the usernames Fenrir and Skoll (both Viking wolf demi-gods), but went with Ragnarok because I sometimes get called that by friends. Although considering that my current username gets shortened to Rag, which sometimes gets mixed up with that small piece of fabric used for cleaning up things, Skoll or something might have been a better choice.

I must get back to it some time, but I moved onto other things because I felt I could use more experience building before attempting the complex shell loader.

As for the pronunciation, I’ve heard it molly-near (some stupid cartoon), mole-near (some show on the history channel), they used both mole-ju-near and mij-ol-near on Stargate SG-1…

The pronunciation of these things is always somewhat up for debate. Older languages had different phonetics, and a word that starts with "Mj-" is always going to be tricky, because it's natural to put a vowel in there.

Just ask around how people say "pwned", and before long, you'll have an array of answers like those below.:
- "Owned, it was just a mis-spell, why does that change the pronunciation"
- "Powned"
- "Pooned"
- "Pawned"
- "Pound"
- "That's not a word"
- "You're not supposed to say it, it's typed"
... and more.

Um... that's probably the linguist in me again. As I said in the "How did you start spudding" thread (or whatever it's called), I just can't stop analysing things and wondering how they work.

Language is one of those things that fascinates me.
