I recently had a birthday and My father got me a shock pump as a little present as he new I had been thinking about making a high pressure launcher.But now that I have the pump I need to figure other things out.I plan to use a smooth bore barrel of 6mm so I can use air rifle pellets and my own little darts,but I'm suck in what valve I should use.It's a toss up between making my own valve or getting a 1/4 QEV ordered from the UK as they are the type I want and cost about the same price after shipping.I'm wondering if anyone could help me that has had experience in these small calibers.

I would go with the QEV, more reliable
and with smaller projectiles and cannons, opening time is important

Opening time is critical with small caliber I gathered myself,but would the type of QEV used have an effect?It's a toss up between the phram type of the piston type,personally I dislike the look of the phram types alot unless there is any significant reasons to use a phram I'm going to use the piston type.

I'll keep you posted on the build up,The barrel is being organised now.

it is a bit slower (not much) but has loads more of flow

I wouldn't say a home made valve has loads more flow.

There is no reduction in area between the chamber and exhaust ports on the piston QEV I think RNA is talking of.

The only notable differences between it and a home made piston valve are:

- lighter piston
- probably larger pilot volume

I agree with what you said, but I think they were talking about diaphragm and piston type QEV's, not a home made piston valve.

Oops my mistake

Misread and probably mixed up what I read with another thread somewhere.

Buying a QEV garuantees you to have a working, fast opening valve with a good amount of flow.
Building your own valve is harder to do, but, it could perform better if you do it right. It also gives more satisfaction.
