I am currently enrolled in a class where we are reqired to make our own movies, and i would like to do a movie on the History of Spudgunning.

So, im wondering if anyone has any specific points in time that made a large difference to the spudgunning world. So far i Have:

1. Drunk Guys making the beer can Tennis Ball Cannon (should make for a great scene)
2. Joel Suprise and the History of spudtech
3. JSR and his introduction of epoxy to the spudgun world
4. Breaking of the "X" limit for the hybrid

Any others i should need? there is alot missing..... like the origins of pneumatics, hybrids, combustions, propane meters, BBMG's, ect?

Spuds on Fire's reverse engineering of the strafer sold by PPP is seen as a big step forward

Don't forget about DR's work with hybrids and his development of Gen II hybrids. To the best of my understanding that is really where the hybrid we know today in the spudgunning community came from.

if you could find the blow-forward breech, that would be good.

the discovery of sdr-21 as a sleeve for GB barrels.

There should of course be a nice in-between phase where pvc combustions became popular, as well as a segment near the end on punkin' chunkin'.

Some BBMG stuff would be cool; you could fit JSR in here. You should make a nice strafer and film it tearing stuff to shreds.

You might also want to include some bits about very old air rifles back in the days of Louis and Clark.

Hybrids would be cool to include quite a bit of info about since the are so unknown. Everyone has seen a basic combustion and an airgun at some point, but few people know of hybrids (even though they basically drive them to work everyday:).

Edit @ ramses & VHman: I could make some short video clips if you wanted some footage of piston valves being used by hybrids. You'd get to see what's behind the silhouette vvv

DR "invented" the concept of the hybrid that the spudding world was first introduced to, although a team working near where Dave Hall does apparently built a pretty big one in the '70s.

Pneumatic cannons have been around forever, but sections on the "Dynamite Gun" and the Girandoni air rifles would be a good place to start.

Propane meters have been around for quite a while in the spudding community, it might take a while to figure out precisely where they came from. Contacting Burnt Latke might be a good place to start for that, as Joel Suprise and Boogieman haven't been heard from lately.

SB15 probably deserves mention for the extremely popular generic hybrid design he introduced, and, if I may be so bold, perhaps a mention of yours truly as the first user (and major proponent of) the universal manometric meter system for hybrids?

I would assume that you already plan to include Larda's hybrid as a major advancement in spudding, and rightly so.

Sadly, its a 8 Minute MAX film, so i might have to leave some stuff out, meaning i might not be able to go into Metering Details, Ect.

Amazingly, im finding i really dont need to do any filming for this movie..... although i will anyway.

Anyone know when Spudfiles.com was Registered ?

And i Almost Forgot, I just HAVE to put Ant in there as a BBMG guy. He contributed alot to Hammer valves, Ect.

thanks for all the replies guys. I will begin work this weekend, when i get my Tennis ball mortar working and i can get a few friends together in the afternoon to clash around empty beer bottles and fire the thing off a few times (invention of "spudgun")

You can use thisas some background if you like. If you build one like this I would suggest also drilling a fairly large hole in the middle of the "ball stop" along with the can opener openings. Also, you'll want to sabot your tennis ball to get decent shots.

Also word to the wise, it will get very warm after a shot...tape will get a little oozy.

Sorry guys, i wrote up a script, and im not going to have NEAR enough time to cover everything. I have posted a script for download below, to see what i have.

What i do need is damage/firing video clips for the Montage idea I have at the end, so i might need some things there.

I was also instructed by the school that i was not to give away too much about how to construct a cannon, so I have specifically left out "how it works"

If you want some of the raw footage from from the HEAL video, feel free to ask.
If you do want it though, I suggest you don't ask for the one where I say bollocks or the last two shots I make on the video (the quality isn't great on those two)

Don't forget to add the Eclipse 40mm and some of Larda's work as milestones for modern cannons. Also, maybe a cameo of the Castleman video for effect.

While flattering, I don't think that's much of a significant milestone in spudgun history.

I would definitely mention the zalinski dynamite gun as well as the holman projector which as far as I can tell was the first true spudgun. It was intended to fire grenades, but loaded with potatoes during periods of boredom while ships were in convoy to conduct mock battles.

Aside from that it should be relatively easy to go up in levels of sophistication for both pneumatics and combustions, for example for the former you could do ball valves -> sprinkler valves -> piston valves and in the process introduce all the little variations and improvements leading up to today's powerhouses.

Larda's first hybrid is definitley worth a mention
