Commercial rupture disks

I saw the Mythbusters use these rupture disks from a company called Oseco on one of their episodes earlier this evening to test for lethal explosive pressures under water. It struck me that these would make some very high quality burst disks for use in hybrids.





I have no idea how much this stuff costs but it looks like an option for really serious cannons. They have many different type, size and burst pressure disks available.

I remember seeing graphite burst disks while browsing on McMaster that were about $80 a pop. If I remember correctly they were set to 100 psi. I suppose if a company is building a gun $80 is insignificant but to the average hobbyist that's often more than the gun itself costs.

They are probably very EXPENSIVE. Too expensive.

They are used in the industry as safety popoffs to vent off pressure quickly when it gets to high.

Yeah! Finally there's a topic I'm familiar with. The rupture discs you see are meant to be held in place via tri-clover clamps on flanged stainless steel pipes. Yes, the piping, clamps and discs would be prohibitively expensive, if buying new, you'd be looking at a couple hundred dollars for the flanged pipes, gasketing and the first disk. I must say, they're a sweet idea, but probably out of reach of most of us unless a great surplus opportunity presents itself.

When the manufacturer doesn't even put the price on the web page it's usually a sign it super expensive.

Indeed - and they're not meant to be used on a regular basis either.

It would be good if we could find specs on the discs themsevles and copy them.As you would be able to buy the material at any engineering workshop or order it in.
