I've got an o-ring that badly needs some greasing... what kind is recommended? wd40 fails. Also, what kind of grease is good for pistons?

WD40 isn't oil and it shouldn't be used as one. It is primarily designed to displace water (WD=water displacing) and acts more as as a cleaner than a lubricant.
The kind of lubricant depends on what the o-ring and the cylinder is made out of. Most, but not all, o-rings can be greased with any type automotive greese. Automotive oil can also be used but a greese is generally prefered.

I just use plumbing lubricant. Ask for it as your hardware store.

I've always used white lithium grease. Never failed me. You can find it at any hardware store.
