Great site and forum you guys have here, wish I had known about it sooner. I'm a novice on the subject, but I hope to learn more from everyone here. As a intro, here's pics of the first mini I built:






As you see, I'm a minimalist with my builds, I use whatever materials are lying around. I made this one late one night in my room, and finished it in about 3 hours. Not great (especially compare to the amazing builds I seen so far here), but it works. The barrel, if you can believe it, is made from rolled printer paper.

I made my first spud gun when I was 15, an ABS built with an 18 inch x 3 inch chamber. It blew up on me on the second day when I just so happen to spray in the ultra-optimal amount of Right Guard into the chamber. Fortunately, since it was made from ABS piping, it didn't shatter into flying shrapnel like as I heard PVC will do. Not so luckily, I was holding the gun, and I got burned by the hot gases leaking from the giant crack in the chamber. I stick to building minis now for that reason, much safer and cheaper, but still lots of fun

Good use of whatever material is to hand is one of the marks of a good spudder, maybe you should apply for a ghetto award welcome to spudfiles

Welcome. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Don't be afraid to make a full sized cannon. Countless people here have made many without failure. If done right, they are safe to use.

Yeh bummer about the failure, mabe a pneumatic? then you can control exzactly how much stress you place on the parts instead of hoping that you don't over do it when the magic button is pressed

Nope, it doesn't burn at all, at least not in my mini guns. I find that paper is a remarkably strong and resilient material for a barrel. I'm guessing that the temperature of the hot gases don't linger around long enough to burn the paper. A plus side is that I can roll a barrel into just about any caliber or length, you just roll more paper onto it if you need a stronger barrel.

The tricky thing is that you can't have gases blowing through the rolled layers, that tends to destroy the barrel outright as gases shoot between the layers. In the above, you'll see a slight burnt ring of masking tape I used to seal the circumference of the barrel to prevent this. There's also a strip of tape holding down the edge of the paper roll inside the barrel for the exact same reason.

As for a video, I don't think that's possible, seeing how I don't know where it is right now .

i used to be just like you, using stuff around the house. i made a gun just like that with butane fuel and another mini using ax for propellant. but i recently built a big pneumatic and plan on building a new piston valve gun and a mini pneumatic. you should deffinately step it up. spudding is real fun.
