Sabot

Hello, Im new here to spudfiles and have just recently made my first spud gun shown below. It has a 2 inch barrel.





I have an idea for a sabot round for this. Im thinking about using a 12 inch spike as my round. For those who dont know a 12 inch spike is essentially a foot long nail. I have run into a few problems as far as the sabot itself though. I dont know what material to use as the sabot. I was thinking about using foam and cutting it into a 2 inch by 1 foot round slug and cutting it in half down the middle and placing the spike in the middle. Does anyone else have a suggestion or another idea?

Try GreatStuff. You can get it at a hardware store. It's that expanding foam sealer/insulator stuff. It's a little finicky, but if you have your mold and round greased fairly well it should work with no problem. I always get too excited about my sabot round, but if you let it sit for a while (6hrs) it should work quite well.

after some searching in the forums (should have done that first) i found that someone also had this idea cept they were smart and added stabilizing fins to it

It's not too terrible. We used the one sabot-esque thing we made in our pneumatic cannon. It doesn't crack or blow by and fires our demo-round pretty quickly and that's at 100p.s.i. It should do just fine for your combustion gun.

where did u get the foam and like what are those stabilizing fins made out of and howd u attach them. just use glue or what? and how well do these shoot? sorry about all the questions lol

It's fine. That's what communities like this are for. Anyways I used 2" insulation foam board, u know, the ones that insulate foundations of buildings? I cut them out in circles the size of the bore and then cut them in half. One piece of foam behind the dart, 4 over it. I used hot glue for everything, including the fins. The fins are made of project board. I glued as many as I could put on (which turned out to be around 7). They shoot like a dream, I've been meaning to make more and try different aerodynamic profiles to separate the sabot better but maybe you can pick up where I left off. They fit very well too. I had to take off the cleanout caps on my cannon to equalize the pressure so the sabot would slide in the barrel. I managed to penetrate 1/4 normalized steel plate. Although I don't have proof .

For my darts I use foam rod. You buy it at hardware stores for insulating pipes. I take the small size and put it in the larger size for my 2" barrel. I don't have a picture of the foam rod. Here is a picture of the dart.

would they fly straight without the stabilizing fins? also how thick did you make the fallow up sabot behind the spike.

They would not fly straight for long unless you have some sore of drag inducing item on the back half of the dart. The one I made only had a 2" piston.
