yes they are illegal in Au, i once got some from a shop that sold them and they didnt care that i didnt have a licence, but when i went back they said that they got in trouble for selling them to people without one so they wouldnt let me get any, just go in and ask and if they want your licence just play dum and say you didnt know you needed one

They're treated the same as other firearm ammunition legally. Don't bother trying to get any now, it's gotten tighter. You need a licence for a gun that's chambered to take the given ammunition in order to be able to purchase it. Just having a firearm licence wont actually let you buy pellets, you need a suitable airgun registered on your licence to even be able to buy them.
I.e. don't ask someone to get you some just because they have a gun licence; they need a suitable firearm registered to it to be able to legally purchase it.

it was only a couple of months ago that they where willing to sell them to me, i also know someone else that has an air rifle and was able to buy pellets without a licence, i think it just depends on the seller, or if they have got in trouble before, all they can say is no, and if they do sell them to you just use cash

Ive been told by people in gun shops that Air rifle pellets arent ammunition - no primer/powder so they dont need a licence. But Ive also been told you do. State law might play a part... but I think its kinda like suggested, its up to the guy whos selling it to you.
You can find "shot" for shotguns in great big bags. just pick the size shot that will fit your barrel. Shot is just lead balls, and last time I checked anyone could buy it.
IT may also be a case of age/looks. last time I tried to buy Air rifle pellets and was refused was when I was 15 in NSW ( at a shop that had been selling me them since I was 11 ).
now im over 30 and in Vic where I was told it was no problem last time I tried.
Ive also seen them for sale on Ebay, which suggests they are fine.

In Vic I can't get shotgun shot, I asked after I'd bought a slingshot rubber because I prefer .38 lead for that type of band but no go unfortunatly.
If you have a junior license (about $40) they don't ask about air rifles or .22, magnum excluded.
