I'm working on a project which will have something like 400psi in the tank regulated down to 250psi chamber/firing pressure (I dont have a compressor).

I'm wondering if this type of regulator is good:

These are more readily available to me compared to conventional CO2 regs, therefore I ask. The one I linked is rated at max 290psi inlet. Are such regs modifiable by way of spring replacement, to increase the working pressure?

Secondly, for regs which come with only 1 gauge, is this is the outlet or inlet pressure gauge?

Stop and think about it for a second, referring to the guage.
Would you not want to know the regulated pressure rather than the input?

Use the proper regulator for the application, not how to modify for an unsafe condition!

Use the correct HPA or CO2 regulator!

The inlet pressure is a rating for the safe pressure of the regulator housing and the valve orifice inside the regulator. When dropping a high pressure such as HPA or CO2 the orifice is much smaller than a low pressure regulator such as a Propane regulator. The pressure does press on the valve component, so it is not recommended to exceed the input rating. Changing the spring only changes the regulated output pressure, not the strength of the valve components in the regulator.

Will agree with Dewey on this...get the proper regulator.

what about modifying a paintball tank regulator to reduce output pressure? i know some manufacturers make it relatively easy by having removable shims to reduce the spring force that keeps the poppet open. not sure about this one:

The Ninja paintball tanks with all shims removed can only go down to 450 psi or so.
