is there another valve i can use that is cheap in New Zealand, for a ball valve im looking at $50-$70 and for a butterfly around $100, is there a cheap way i can make my own?

BTW prices are in New Zealand currency, $1NZD=$0.62US(roughly)

Piston valves are Very cheap to make, And there very powerful.

yeah but its difficult to make a piston valve, well i looked at one on advancedspuds and i couldnt understand it very well

its very simple to make a piston valve, or it can be the most difficult thing you ever built, it all depends on the design, the easiest one i've made was just a piece of wood glued on to a piece of rubber, simple!

For a metal ball valve ~50 mm diameter, I should think that's about the right cost. 70 NZD is a bit expensive, but 50 NZD is what I would end up paying over here. (roughly)
Have you seen any plastic ones? A 50 mm (acctualy 2", but I'm converting for you here...) plastic ball valve costs me ~11 USD.

Ballvalves look like they would be hard to make, and I'm talking from the perspective of owning a lathe here.

Perchance one could find a union in New Zealand? A 50mm plastic one costs me ~12 USD over here, while a metal one costs me ~18 USD.

yeah a plastic one would cost $40-$50NZD here, but i hear the max pressure rating of plastic ones are 102psi.i dont see why NZ cant just import from USA, instead we make our own pipe with Australia and have different pressure ratings like Class D and it cost shit loads.i was reading someone elses topic and they said they could get something like 10' of 2" pipe for $10US, that would cost $100NZD over here its crazy. I paid $40NZD for a 100mm extension so i could have a threaded end cap on my combustion spudgun.

my grandad gave me a 15mm plastic ball valve but that is way too small.
are pistons effective? whats the max pressure of the easiest ones to build?anyone have a simple diagram or insturctions?

first of all check out the spudwiki to understand piston valves.Second.A 15 mm ballvalve can actuate one piston valve ( say 22 mm..) wich could in turn activate a larger piston valve.

15mm is over 1/2" that would MORE than enough to actuate even a large piston or diaphragm valve! Hell even supahs only use ether a blow gun or a 1/4" ball valve.

Check out BCvids they have a video on making piston valves.

You might also look into to buying a sprinkler valve less performance but easier to use.

ok thanks i will look at those, im thinking of buying a modded sprinkler valve of spudtech but thats $34US then it has to be shipped over here, so im looking at $100NZD for all of it shipped.or i could buy one at $17US not modded.

If you do buy the none modded one I would definitely recommend modding it, you get a lot better performance. It's very easy to do all you really need is some epoxy and a 1/4" fitting and a blow gun or ball valve, you might even be able to use the valve you have. All you need to do is buy a 15mm fitting instead of the 1/4" one.

could i use this as a sprinkler valve and mod it like the ones you guys use? its a new zealand trading web site like ebay.

Ya, I don't see any reason why not. I haven't found a sprinkler valve that I can't modify, and if you do have any problems modifying it just pull it open and post some pics. I would be glad to help you mod it.

ok thanks coz its the only cheap sprinkler type valve ive found.will it have the same conecpt of modifying as the other ones? like do i follow the same "how to" plans?

btw is their something else apart froma blowgun to release the air from a modded sprinkler valve?
edit:is 1" a bigger enough sprinkler valve? im planning on using 100mm chamber 700mm long
