Is there any easy way of testing how powerful it is?

Normally you'd need a chronograph but you'd also need a spare hundred quid

Here's a way to measure velocity without a chrony that in many cases will give you reasonable accuracy.

There is also a smartphone app that automatically does what you'd need to do in your second link, it's designed for airguns though so no telling if it'd be able to register a potato cannon.
I believe it's called ChronoFX.
