You would need a car ignition coil to get a good spark.

Yep, a car ignition coil will give a nice fat spark reliably when you discharge a cap from a flash circuit into it. I got the set up on fear and it works great.

I never used a relay in my coil setup and it works fine.
In conclusion, no.

Here is a topic that discusses coil setups:

This diagram uses a battery rather than a flashboard, so you just need to wire the capacitor in place of the battery.
The blue box is a capacitor, but it isn't needed in this case. Just leave it out.

I bought a camera and got the circuit out i solderd some wires from capacitor and battery to switches. i hooked it up at my car COIL ..
Jesus one biep..biep...biep of a spark it travels 1.3 centimeters and really thick and bleu.
I fried myself with a spark it hurts like hell my arm was twitching for 10 minutes.
But thanks to all

Glad to hear you figured it out, i zapped myself countless times with my camera-flash / coil setup too :P, it made every muscle in my body tense up :o. I got mine to jump about 5 inches :p

A 50k tazer can jump a gap of about two inches. The thing about that tazer is, it only carries about 2 milliamps. Your flash circuits carry much more than that most likely and any more than that is quite dangerous. Your arms was twitching for a reason. You guys should remember, pain is there for a reason, it means you're doing something that's probably not a good idea...

what are your opinions on fly back transformer's? ya reckon they would be any good for a hybrid?

I dont know much about flybacks only that they give fat sparks... but i think they will work nice for a hybrid.. but high amp's so watch out!

10,000 volts is required to produce a spark 10mm long at normal air pressure, when you introduce the spark gap to a pressure of 14.7 psi it will only jump 5mm.
That means you need a fat ass spark at like 5x.

Peace

Its been soemtime before since I last used a stungun for spudgun purposes so deal with me, but isn't it take 2 ma across the heart to kill?

I always hear either 2 mA or 200 mA. If it is 2 mA, then 200 isn't much better.

2 mA is harmless.
A flyback is well suited for hybrid ignition.
With a metal cannon, something to note is that you will have high voltage between the cannon body and most parts of the circuit (including the low voltage parts). This is if one end of the circuit is grounded to the metal, you can eliminate this risk by keeping the HV side completely insulated from the cannon body, or by having an additional spark gap (internal or external) between the body and the HV ground.
