i am thinking about the one with the pin, if you could find something that would knock the pin out when it hit something, that might work

yea but it might be un reliable to get it to hit whatever you need it to hit to knock out the pin (woah weird sentence there) so an impact bomb isnt the best idea especially for a first this is his first right?
current projects: co-axial piston valve.Status DONE!
S.P.E.C.S update mk 1 construction begining in febuary all the maths for it are done plans are drawn up and parts are listed.
NEXT project:auto piston valve.

what about having the pin tied to a string and having the other end on the gun... after it flies so far the pin pulls out and the mortar keeps going

I can't come up with a good idea for an impact driven firing. Every fiber of my being is telling me to NEVER drop charged PVC, and shrapnel is not much fun either so metal is potentially out.

I can see plenty of good ways to do this with paintballs. All you would really need is a couple of paper towel tubes made into sabots. Fire them up into the air, they release the paintballs which fall happily back to earth and whatever is in their way. You could do a very similar thing with 6mm bbs or 6mm paintballs. You could even use water balloons filled with paint or even those paintball grenades (although you would get much better spread and coverage with the aerial release).

The premise of an actual mortar shell is literal detonation at impact which is what causes the spread. And dealing with PVC, you don't particularly want that.

As for the actual mortar design the simplest (read: most compact and realistic) would be a short coaxial with a bipod built in.

The following pic show a couple of quick designs NOTE: each design is only 2 to 2 1/2 feet long (you don't need extreme range or massive hitting power for a lobbing weapon).

The top pic is of a coaxial mortar. The red part is a tee which the bipod comes out of and which slips over the end of the barrel for quick setup and take down. You would drop the load down the barrel (blue) which runs through a dremmeled fitting (green) and through the chamber (white, probably 3 inch) to a valve of your choice (yellow, most likely a diaphram or you could build something like the bergless cannon design http://www.armoredfistpaintball.com/bergles_cannon.htm). You can read up on coaxials in the showplace or how to sections for more in depth building techniques.

The bottom pic is of a simple over under design. This would probably be easier since the barrel (blue) would be the same size pipe as the chamber (white). The tee (red) could be attached or a slip on again. and would be either smaller if fixed or the size to go around the pipe if slip on and off. The valve would most likely be a sprinkler valve (yellow). This would be a cheaper build since it would really only need one 5 foot section of 1 1/4 inch or 1 1/2 in pipe for the two major parts. You can also read up on over unders in the showcase and how to sections.

My suggestion if you have little experience is the over under design. It is really straightforward. For simplicity, I would build like shown with the red tee dremmeled out so it slips all the way around the chamber and glue it on. Then the bipod could be sliped in when needed and taken out for transport. A sprinkler valve is going to simpler first valve than a diaphram or the bergles. If you are up for a challenge though coaxial is the way to go for realism and compactness.

please never ask for step by step plans ever on this site, this is for people who "design and build" there own cannons

as for your bursting projectile that remains unsolved by and standard methods how every you may want to try this

for bbs I'm thinking about instead of holes the size of bbs putting cut up ballpoint pen tubes to act like little barrels to increase power of bbs

I am thinking of using a Stem Valve. How do you get it in place? Is there one you can buy that will tread in? The one I got off a old bicycle will not stay put because it can't tread in.

HaiThar, how did you create that image with all of the detailed shadings and all? Did you have to use a special program that automatically can add shadings, or did you acutually manually draw in thfe shading

If anyone elses know the answers, please let me know.

Nice work BTW.[/img]

However you make the aerial burst, its probably going to be more trouble than its worth, why not make a shouldered mounted RPG filled with tonnes of bb's, or semi auto nerf rocket cannon, now that would be cool...:D

Ya I am thinking of using mini nerf footballs with the tail fins to be what I launch, but if I want ones that have a whistle in them that are small I have to get them from the UK. Any ideas on how to make a mini foot ball whistle loud enough to hear from 10ft away or so?
