Well then i would prefer a shrouded barrel. IE: a barrel witrh some holes in it inside a larger pipe. Then you don't need to increase barrel length and thus sacrifice performance.

Increasing the barrel length won't sacrifice performance...cutting holes in the barrel would.

Increasing it beyond the optimum length as most people do would wreak havoc on performance due to friction.

Right, but you shouldn't need to go beyond optimum, just right to optimum.

But as of yet we have no tools or equations to determine what that optimum point is. Thus most people do beyond it considerably.

GGDT does not take into account silencers. There is not really an "add more volume to barrel than the barrel physically contains" input field.

We must be talking about different things. I was talking about increasing the barrel length AS a silencer (the idea presented in original post), not increasing the barrel length with a silencer.

When you go beyond the optimum performance crashes quickly.
Also, when sucking vacuum you may get a bang, but then in reverse. So instead of highpressure in the barrel blasting out to the environment, the environment air smacks into the barrel, a balloon popping in reverse..?
