so ive been trying to think of a way to get rid of excess chlorine gas, and i need some help. (MrCrowley you dont have to post :) )

so far ive thought of burning magnesium in the presence of the chlorine to make a harmless solid. Do you guys think this will work?

also hydrogen would be better to use but the rxn would make the container go esplode.

and dont tell me "OMG chlorine is deadly you will die", i know what it is, im not a dumbass.

Why not just vent it outside?

Just wondering, what are you doing with chlorine in the first place, and where did you get it?

Just curious.

it would be expensive but i know a website where you can get sodium. you could make sodium chloride. it would probably make a big boom though.
Chlorine isn't that hard to make

You can turn it into salt with sodium but that makes flame and I don't know how efficent that is.

Would good high quality carbon do the trick? or does it only work for liquids? you could also try bubbling it through pee or ammonia (thats what makes piss filter out chlorine right?) i heard that you could make a chlorine filter using pee or it was possibly an ammonia filter...i dunno. The magnesium should work i think i heard about that somewhere to (an old chem book?) anyway what are you doing with chlorine?

PS.dont comment about the piss thing its just something i heard. :)

Exotic metals, pissing in a carbon filter... you guys are an odd bunch.

Why not use clog remover? Brands are available that are simply NaOH pellets.

You could ice the NaOH solution an make a bleach solution when Cl2 is added, but by the sound of things, you would have more fun with the NaClO3 that comes from dissolving the Cl2 in warmer solutions. (Other clog removers could yield you KClO3)

Now we are still curious why you have a problem about having too much chlorine gas....

Have you been electrolysing a NaCl solution?

i will be, that is why i need to know what im going to do with the chlorine, so sodium is out of the question as i need the sodium, and pat was correct with it making a big boom

and show no mercy, i cant vent it cause i dont want to kill anyone

and i could make this problem go away if we could use NaOH but i dont thin i can electrolyze it :(

and BC from what u told me it looks like H2 would be produced and it would go boom as it will be at 600 derees C

By the time you run the CL2 line over to the NaOH solution (using a cooling jacket if needed) the H2 produced by the reaction will be no where near 600*C, it isn't like the stuff is going to be coming over in incredible volume. The H2 that comes off can simply be burned off by a propane torch over the NaOH container.

if you are not trying to capture the hydrogen why are you doing electrolysis. why is it going to be that hot? if you explain a little more we could probably be more help

He is not doing electrolysis of water.

Edit- Damn it, he sneaked in on me.

Anyway, you could capture the H2 if you wanted it, but burning it would dispose of it safely and easily.
