I have tried to make a piston before but it didn't really work out. I am about to get the stuff to try again. I have heard that neoprene is the best stuff to use as a sealing face. what part of lowes or homedepot would it be in? any other tips are appreciated.

thanks
Pat

innertube from a biketire is also a very nice sealing face, and cheaper too i believe :) -it's always nice to have some alternatives

In homedepot you can get some neoprene washers next to the regular washers and nuts and bolts. They are pretty cheap also

hope that helps

As mentioned before, inner tube is a good sealant and i can tell you that because my piston cannon uses inner tube. Make sure to bolt it to you piston. This is my piston.

on mc master they sell neoprene ronds and sheets you could use the rod as the piston body and sheet as sealing face

when i go to homedpot i'll loook for the neoprene washers and if I can't find any i am going to get a inner tube.
I found something else that might work the inside of a kickball. i might try it.

Try to get/make a gasket punch if you use inner tube. Copper couplings sharpened work great. Put the inner tube over a block of wood and pound the coupling into it with a mallet.

Those jagged scissor-cut edges make me twitch.

You can buy rubber roof membrain in big sheets and its cheap by the foot...Its also used in pond making as the liner....I think its a synthic rubber so it might last longer.....I use it my self in ASCO solenoid valves ,and it works good and hold at least 120 psi..It might hold more???
