So i am planning to build a suppressor for my combustion cannon. I was reading the "how to" topic of building a suppressor, and what i got out of it is that the volume of the supressor should be about the volume of the chamber?? Also, that if you drill holes into your barrel, you will lose power?
What i was orginally thinking is that i have a 7' GB barrel with a muzzle break and a breech. i will build a suppressor body of 3" abs and i will have it be 1.5' long. add some couplings and bushing and then push it down my barrel until it is right above my breech. (my chamber is 2.5' of 3" abs) I will drill 1/8" holes into my barrel and fill the supressor volume with cotton
^^ with this will i lose alot of power? and will it actually suppress the cannon somewhat? (i dont need it to be *that* silent, just by a bit)

Are you making a combustion cannon?
I'd say the first step would be designing a quiet C:B ratio. Maybe a little less than 79-80%, and around 50%. That would reduce noise significantly. Afterwards, you could design a suppressor to further reduce the muzzle blast.

Ideally it should be at least the volume of the chamber, especially in the case of pneumatics, but it you make it smaller it doesn't mean it won't be effective.
You will, but not a lot. Also, that if you drill holes into your barrel, you will lose power?
Sounds good so far, you only need to drill holes in the last 5-10 inches of your barrel. What i was orginally thinking is that i have a 7' GB barrel with a muzzle break and a breech. i will build a suppressor body of 3" abs and i will have it be 1.5' long. add some couplings and bushing and then push it down my barrel until it is right above my breech. Don't, it will likely ignite

I saw in a thread a while ago someone posted a formula for working out the ideal silencer volume,i will try and find it, although you need to know what the chamber presure is which could be hard for a combustion.
edit:
edit:
ahh it was JSRThe theoretical ideal volume is [(working chamber pressure/14.7psi) x chamber volume] - barrel volume or thereabouts, but this number is usually so big that it's completely impractical to use so just make it as big as possible.

It doesn't ignite from the propelling gasses of a combustion tho.

Ya know, I can understand there's a bit of a cool factor to having a suppressor for your spudgun, but other than that, seriously . . .why? There HAS to be a significant reduction in power, and half of the fun of a spudgun is how freaking loud they are. I tape my barrels closed just so it's louder when I dry fire it. Spud guns are really only good for a few things. 1 Instantaneous and uncontrolled laughter, 2 impressing your friends and 3 instantly pissing off your neighbors. Maybe some destruction here and there too. A suppressor would take so much away. Just me though. I like them loud. Build them big.

i think i just had a mouse fart:O wait, wait beep.. there it goes
how quiet are you really getting it though? how well do they really work? how much power is lost? how much weight is added?

k the suppressor is added. its definitly more quiet. (its right where i want it. in terns of how loud it can be without being annoying) powerloss is definitly an issue now. it has definitly lost *some* power, not a terrible amount. but the sacrifiec is well worth it, weight isnt an issue, it only adds like 1 pound to it.
