There is air on both sides of the diaphragm(the rubber disk thingy); one side of the air is the side of the main chambers air and is fairly large. The other side is called the pilot and is fairly small. When the pilot is vented, the diaphragm moves, allowing the main chamber of air to release into the barrel. The blowgun releases air when the trigger on it is pulled, and this vents the pilot.

Of course, it's just a close nipple and a blowgun, should be available at any hardware store.

Just go up and ask: "Where do you keep the nipples?" :D

When the trigger is squeezed it opens the valve, I wont go into detail, because you don't really need to know at the moment.

But when the trigger is squeezed, the valve opens, lets air out, opens the diaphragm(valve) and lets all the air out the barrel.

Squeezing the blow gun will empty the pilot area of the sprinkler.
This means air moves out and the pilot side of the diaphragm gets lower pressure then the other side, pusing the diaphragm upwards.
This opens the valve.

As already explained, you can get them premodded for next to nothing ;)

It'll probably cost about $10 to mod a sprinkler. You need the blowgun and the correct fitting.

Based on the research ssb73q did (links to the posts on the old spudtech archive have been posted earlier in this thread), a mod'd valve will increase the muzzle velocity by a lot, perhaps 1.5 to 2.x compared to the stock valve. That works out to 2~4 times as much kinetic energy in the round.
