I was visiting an old armoury, one of the guns on display was an early airgun with a copper ball reservoir, just like the ones shown here.

Bit of a dodgy resevoir location on those. Can't imagine it helped having a small football sized copper ball sitting to one side of the gun.

That thing would be a bit** to aim with all that weight to one side.

Imagine what they could have done with a bit of expert help from this forum!

This is really a sporting/recreational rifle, unlike say the Girandoni.

In all fairness, it's full of air :D

Considering the materials and tools they had at their disposal at the time, antique airguns are amongst the most intricate and sophisticated weapons of their time, I'm sure they could have taught us a thing or too!

Rubber is not an ideal pressure chamber material. It can inflate and deflate yes... but unless you contain it with a rigid outer chamber it keeps ON expanding as you increase the pressure and a rigid outer chamber would totally defeat the point.

ah, yes but what if it were like the inner structure of duct tape. with fibers running through the material which would limit expansion and increase durability.

At my lemonade stand I used to give the first glass away free and charge five dollars for the second glass. The refill contained the antidote

It's probably similar to the Girandoni:
