Acronym Convention?

hi - new here thanks for all the good info.

i'll be posting my work in progress soon, but was wondering if there's a convention to the acronyms people are assigning to their creations.

like HPVR for "High Power and Velocity Rifle" and the like...

It's largely down to the individual builder, some choose not to use acronyms at all and go for something more artistic or awe-inspiring, while many projects simply remain nameless.

You'll find hundreds of topics named 'My first cannon' so stay far away from those titles

Personally I use SG(SchutzGewehr) and then a final letter significant to the project, so far I have...

SGA(SG-Assault)
SGV(SG-Vengeance)
SGP(SG-Penetrator)
SGI(SG-Import)

I pick and choose.

Sometimes I have acronyms (HEAL - High Efficency Air Launcher), or full names (Behemoth, Raptor).
I often look for an acronym, and if there isn't a good one (that's both easy to say and remember - doesn't happen too often), then I'll come up with a full name.

A good tip is to put your cannon's more impressive specs in the topic title, helps to get people's attention.

It's really up to the builder. I generally use acronyms which are horribly unwieldy and difficult to say, but the trick to getting views is not the name, it's putting the impressive specs in the title, like: SCTBDCv1.5: 450psi, 50mm steel burst disk cannon. That, and building it out of copper always seems to work

Oh and to up the views even more, mentions your gun when ever possible, always link to it, and to make it seem on topic.

Refer the topic to your gun and compare the ever so small similarities no one cares about, sometimes it's enough to slip past.

Unless I'm horribly mistaken, he's talking about me, or possibly me and Rag. We both advertise our best creations incessantly. However, the level that Crowley advertised the SGA for the Instructables contest far exceeds advertisement of the HEAL and SCTBC.

Yeah I actually was going to say I did in my post, but not as much on this forum, I only really mention it when a 2" piston is involved, my how-to.

But for instructables I posted it on about 25 websites, I didn't really say much here about it. And on the other websites, it was all relating to that website and got positive feedback, not 'stop spamming the forum'.

It's all over google, it's funny when I stumble accross it at some weird website or video website.

I only advertise the SGA as much as DYI does his, I haven't seen a post from DYI or Rag that doesn't belong when they talk about thier cannons, so it's fine with me.

But what I said 3 posts above is true. Or just stick it on instructables

I just find it funny, not annoying that your mentioning your cannons alot, it just seems in my perspective like you guys are having a battle for the top muzzle energy cannon or something as joke.

Just funny how many times you guys mention muzzle energy with your cannons


Oh and the advertising thing was for spudfiles as well, I told PCGUY I was going to put it on every forum related in a way. I got over 3000 hits to my cannon on spudfiles from the instructables contest. So I brought possibly 3000 people to spudfiles, most would've left, maybe the odd one joining up.

My two cannons:

PBS-90= Pneumatic BoomStick (90 PSI)

The CMBC= The Chaos Monkey Burst Cannon


I dunno if anyone agrees with me on this, but I prefer numbers that actually have technical signifcance rather than ones just tacked on for "coolness" value.

It's funny how small the scale of my current projects are really. They certainly won't be competitive in the muzzle energy field. As far as their acronyms, probably the He257LR, and the PG1. Some members should be able to figure out what those stand for. One is in the late development/construction fase, and the other is in early development.

The best names are those that actually have some significance. A few of us actually tried to rename the SCTBDC to something at least vaguely more pronounceable, but failed completely. Something like SWAT, FEAR, or HEAL are examples of good names (although only one is an acronym).
