suggestions:
*D batteries
*bouncy balls (the big ones)
*mini tennis balls (for dogs)
*or even make your own pvc rockets :D

I would just like to say before you might buy d-cell batteries they fit perfectly in a 1.25'' barrel rather than 1.50''.

If you toss in a few extra bucks you could do both, just buy a few extra pieces...

You're right, but a barrel shouldn't be of much larger volume than the chamber because the pressure would decrease too much.
If you were to make the barrel out of a stronger material (say copper pipe) then the barrel (typical ABS/PVC), would you be able to reduce the barrel length (and thus the volume) in order to keep more pressure?

Not really, the volume isn't going to increase/decrease with the strength of the material.

Don't worry about ratios too much if all you want is a 'fun gun'.
