And Ive done it dozens of times, with no explosion what so ever.
It won't make it explode directly (unless you've used crappy material for the barrel). But if your gun isn't built to handle the recoil or if you aren't prepared for it then it is very easy to snap fittings and/or hurt whoever is firing.

A properly built gun won't explode even if you fill the barrel with lead and fire. On the other hand, if your gun was made of PVC, excessive recoil could damage the fittings, but any heavy projectiles will do that.

I had a similar problem with my SCTBDC that involved the DWV ABS reducers on the barrel cracking open when I shot 10 pound darts at 400 psi. Wrapping it in a large amount of fiberglass seemed to solve the problem.

Barrel filled all the way
It was made out of sch40 pvc

Get malleable iron fittings and ballvalve and try again.
The water puts too much stress on PVC.
