Travel and pilot volume are direct proportional to eachother. Just multiply the travel by pi*r*r.

And for the T=D/4 rule, it determines the MINIMAL piston travel. And thus can help one figuring out how much travel and thus pilot volume one should have.

in my new design for a gun the pilot volume is big does this matter ?
does it have to be very very overkill to not work ?

it would decrease performance and might not work but it all depends on the pressures you use and how big the pilot volume actually is.

But stay on topic, this isn't your thread so don't high jack it with your problems and concerns, make your own topic.

Define "big".
If youve got yourself a good pilot valve (large in diameter) and a piston that seals off well (o-rings) then it will work, no matter how large your pilot volume is.
BUT less pilot volume = faster opening.
