This isn't mine, I found the link on the MAKE:Blog and thought I'd share it with you guys:
carbide cannon

Basically you mix calcium carbide with water and it produces acetylene gas, it's based on a kids toy from the 70's so it must be reasonably safe.

Why in the hell would you consider anything for children from the '70s "safe"?

bangsite is just powdered calcium carbide nothing else. Bangsite is also very cheap and all you need to do to produce the gas is mix it properly with water, so it might be cool.

yeah, acetelene i like the high explosive of gasses, like lets say propane was black powder, acetelene would be tnt  so dont use that to fire a projectile cuz the chamber will detonate :D
in the upcoming presidential election, there will be several candidates who will be running, one of whom is Hillary Clinton. Now WAIT A SECOND!!! I though there was some sort of rule that prevented someone from serving more than two terms in office. Vote Against Hillary: Presidential Elections 08

from what I have seen acetylene releases far too much energy when it is ignited. its even worse than combining oxygen and propane gas. a carbide cannon should not fire ANYTHING, the design i have seen in Backyard Ballistics was designed and safety tested for blank shots only.
